MCSE - Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer

NOTE: Mainstream support for Windows Server 2003 ended on July 13, 2010. Microsoft Windows 2000 Server reached the end of its product lifecycle on July 13, 2010.

The Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) certification shows clients and employers that you are skilled in designing, implementing, and administering infrastructures for business solutions based on Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft Windows 2000 Server. Implementation responsibilities include installing, configuring, and troubleshooting network systems.

MCSE Specializations


With an increasing number of IT professionals pursuing certification and a significant demand for specialized expertise, MCSE specializations provide a valuable means of demonstrating your proficiency in a particular technical field. These specializations are not more advanced than the MCSE certifications; they are simply more focused:

  • MCSE Messaging on Windows Server 2003
  • MCSE Security on Windows Server 2003
  • MCSE Messaging on Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • MCSE Security on Microsoft Windows 2000 Server 

MCSE Upgrade Paths


If you have an MCSE on Windows Server 2003, you can upgrade to MCITP by passing as few as two exams.


Earn all three required MCTS on Windows Server 2008 certifications by successfully completing the upgrade exam: Exam 70-649. Complete your MCITP certification by passing Exam 70-646: PRO: Windows Server 2008, Server Administrator and Exam 70-647 PRO: Windows Server 2008, Enterprise Administrator. Refer to the following upgrade paths for additional details.
